Sitting on the stool, her stomach in a knot and her hand holding the phone shaking, Maggie was so stunned she couldn’t speak. She fought to catch her breath and slow her racing heart. ‘Oh, God,’ she finally managed to croak. ‘It’s you.’

‘Yeah.’ He breathed out heavily.

‘How did you get my number?’ she asked, still breathless. She couldn’t believe this was happening, that she was hearing his voice after all the years that had passed and all the hurt and disappointment, the wondering and frantic searching for him.

‘Your friend Brian just called me. He said… well, that you needed to think. But then I guess he felt you needed a push so he gave me your number and urged me not to hang around. I hope you’re not mad.’

Maggie sighed. ‘At Brian? Who could be? He means well and he probably thought he was being helpful.’ She sent a silent ‘thank you’ to Brian, knowing that if he hadn’t done what he did, she wouldn’t have had the courage to call Paul herself. Whatever happened next was in the lap of the gods.

‘I’m glad he called me,’ Paul said. ‘And wow, here I am talking to you. Unbelievable.’

‘I can’t believe I’m talking to you either. It’s been a long time,’ Maggie replied wistfully, trying to calm herself down.

‘Too long,’ he said. ‘And that’s my fault.’

‘Yes, I think it is.’ Maggie closed her eyes and put her forehead on her knees for a moment, trying to get her racing heart to slow down. Here it was. That moment she had been waiting for. His voice was deeper than she remembered and she found it hard to believe it was really him at the other end.

‘I’m sure you have been wondering what happened back then,’ he said.

‘Yes, I have,’ Maggie said, lifting her head. ‘For a very long time.’

‘I’m sure. I’d like to meet you in person and explain. And maybe…’ He stopped and let out a laugh. ‘I have no idea what to say.’

‘Me neither,’ Maggie said.

‘Well, that’s great, isn’t it? We haven’t been in touch for thirty years and when we are, we have nothing to say.’

‘Oh, I have plenty to say,’ Maggie declared with a sudden rush of emotion. ‘It’s just that I don’t know where to start.’

‘We have to meet,’ Paul insisted.

‘I know,’ Maggie said, the knot in her stomach tightening again.

‘How? Where?’

‘Not in public,’ Maggie replied. ‘And not here in Sandy Cove. I want it to be away from everyone. This village is lovely, but…’

‘But everyone knows what you’re doing even before you’re doing it?’ he filled in, his voice full of laughter.

Maggie let out a laugh, warming to his charming voice. ‘Yes. This is not exactly New York. Or even Dublin.’

‘Where are you right now?’

‘In the cottage. I mean, the cottage my parents used to own. They sold it but now I’m renting it for the summer,’ Maggie babbled nervously.

‘I know the house.’

‘Of course. What about you?’ she asked.

‘Still with my Beara family. I was planning to go to Killarney tomorrow.
